Chapter 11

The two soldiers left without offering Adam or Ella another word. The moment they were gone, Adam edged closer to Ella. “Hey,” he said quietly.

She looked up at him. Her eyes were dry, and the fear that had shown on her face as they’d snuck into the camp was gone. “We tried,” she said. “We had to try, didn’t we?”

“I don’t know,” Adam admitted. “I don’t know anymore.”

“You were so sure,” she said, her eyes wide.

“It didn’t make any difference, though,” he said. “And it’s not as if we came close to accomplishing what we set out to do. We never really had a chance at killing Thompson.”

“How can you say that?” she asked. “You were so close. You were in his tent.”

He sighed. “Maybe I don’t have it in me,” he said. “You’re right. I was there, and he was there, and there was nothing standing between us, and I had the weapon in my hand—and I blew it. At the end of the day, I just blew it.”

“Adam.”

“We’re in here because of me,” he said. “If I’d done what you said—if I’d kept my emotions out of it and just gotten the job done—we would have been back over the fence by now. We’d have gotten out of here.”

“You can’t talk like that,” Ella said. “If it isn’t my fault, then it isn’t your fault either.”

“I had the chance to strike and I didn’t take it,” Adam said.

Ella moved closer to him and wrapped her free arm around his waist. She rested her head against his chest, and for a moment, Adam was comforted by her presence.

“We’ve gotten out of worse situations than this,” she said.

“What situations have we gotten out of that were worse than this?” he asked her.

“The Santa Joaquina?”

“At least with the Birkins and the McTerrells, we were only a little outnumbered,” Adam pointed out. “There’s no way we can fight our way through all the soldiers on this base.”

Ella sighed heavily. She sounded exhausted. “I can’t believe this is going to be where it all ends.”

“I should have listened to you,” Adam said. “We should have run away when we had the chance.”

“No,” Ella said. “If you’re ever going to listen to me, Adam, listen to me now. I’m glad we came back. All right? I’m glad we tried to do this. Yes, we failed. But you were right when you said that that bomb would go off eventually, and I wouldn’t want to live the rest of my life thinking I could have prevented it. We had to try.”

They were quiet then. Adam felt as though he was standing at the very edge of the world, as though he and Ella were the last two members of the human race.

When the door banged open and the sound of people marching in broke the silence, Adam did not release his hold on Ella. He pulled her closer, held her tighter. He could feel her breath against his chest. He tried to narrow his
